Gus Hansen: "The Great Dane" of Pro Poker CircuitGustav "Gus" Hansen is one of the best and impressive poker pros in the circuit. His career earned him three World Poker Tour victories, a one-table event and an invitational. In 2004, the World Poker Tour Walk of Fame was launched and Hansen was one of the first inductees together with James Garner and Doyle Brunson. He was also voted in December 2004 by People Magazine as one of the world's 50 Sexiest Men Alive. Hansen's playing style is known to be very loose and aggressive. His opponents find him too unpredictable since he's known for raising and bluffing with any two cards, which led them to either call or raise; not knowing if Hansen has a winning hand or not. He is a risk-taker and this playing style of his was often criticized. However, Hansen's style works for him and it proved and earned him success several times. Pot odds and implied odds seem to be the ingredients of Hansen's strategy in winning. He is also an expert in probability and he is able to identify his opponents' next moves making him have more control over the game. Hansen's game specialty is Texas Hold'em. Gus Hansen is dubbed as "The Great Dane" due to his Danish ancestry. He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1974. Prior to his pro poker career, Hansen used to be a top-notch backgammon and tennis player. He went to the United States as an exchange student at first. But while in Santa Cruz, California he found his niche after playing the game of poker. Hansen also had an inclination to doing business. He was a co-founder and resident pro player of the pokerchamps.com; an online poker site which was launched in 2003. But come 2005, the website was sold to a British company named Betfair for more than 100 million Danish Crowns, which is an equivalent of 13 million Euros or almost 8.8 million Franks. Aside from Hansen's share from selling the poker site, he also has accumulated more than $ 2 million earnings from tournaments as of 2005. Kind of ironic and quite baffling especially when Gary Jones said at the British Poker Open that Gus Hansen is having money troubles lately. Hansen enjoys an independent lifestyle and he likes it that way. He has no romantic attachment at the moment and he said he likes it so far. He loves to gamble and play in tournaments. He currently resides in Monte Carlo. |
